Mission
To remove physical, social and financial barriers to help disabled people participate and thrive to their fullest potential and to increase participation, visibility, awareness and perceived value of disabled sports and disabled people, balancing the realities that disabled people have unique issues that can be undermined or exacerbated by careless actions.
Some background
The Need
Disabled individuals face additional costs to participate in daily life. These costs are enormous and sometimes not affordable. For example: an independently usable manual wheelchair costs over $2500. Prosthetic limbs can cost over $30,000, while a power wheelchair can easily reach $15,000.
Adaptive sports equipment is also very expensive. A hand cycle is over $2000 and adaptive ski frames start at $3500 making them an unattainable luxury to many disabled people.
Combining the added costs of daily life with punitive and outdated laws restricting assets and savings, loss of income, and/or lack of opportunity to earn a livable wage leaves many disabled people and their families in severe, long term/permanent financial distress.
The result is often the disabled person participating at a lower level, being relegated to a limited use / scheduled program or not participating at all, due to lack of financial resources.
Ski Gear and Lessons
Services
Unlimbited loans our Tessier Dualski to club members on a first come first served / reservation basis. Ski buddies and training for family and friends are provided at no charge.
Lessons are with PSIA Adaptive Certified ski school instructors and include equipment and lift tickets.
Tickets and passes to ski at Whitefish Mountain Resort are provided to eligible (low to moderate income) disabled Flathead Valley residents and affiliated group members as our budget allows. Summer equipment includes fly fishing gear, wheelchair accessible tents and a range of other camping gear.
